Real Media is a multimedia file extension developed by RealNetworks. It was produced in order to dramatically reduce the size of audio and video files, making them suitable for online streaming. The official player for these media format is RealPlayer, which is big in size and, besides, is not free.
Real Alternative is a small application with the ability to play all Real Media files including '.RM', '.RAM' ( audio extensions) and '.RMVB' ( video extension). In addition, the program will install the Active-X control and browser plug-in for Internet Explorer, Firefox, Netscape, Google Chrome and other browsers.
If you choose the DirectShow filter during installation, you will be able to play all the previous audio and video formats on any media player installed in your computer. Otherwise you will need to install Media Player Classic. One of the limitations of this program is that it only plays the first clip of '.SMIL' and '.SMI' streaming files. After finishing the setup process, you will be prompted to configure the different RealMedia settings such as streaming speed, buffer time, audio sample rate and more.
Version 1.9 of this program optionally setups Media Player Classic version 6.4 which supports OGG, MP3, MP4 in addition to DVD and MPEG-1/2 formats.
